On View
Not on viewDescriptionThis is an example of how sixteenth century Spanish painters reinterpreted Italian and Northern European models. It depicts the moment after Jesus was scourged, as described in the Gospels; we see him in close-up and still tied to the column. The painting was intended to help the viewer picture the Flagellation and experience feelings of compassion and remorse. Christ’s delicate features contrast with his swollen cheekbone and the marks left by the crown of thorns on his forehead, all physical signs of his suffering. The open mouth is an invitation for the pious viewer to imagine what Jesus might say to him or her.
