DescriptionLike his contemporaries, Hernández Acevedo documented in his works the transformation in Puerto Ricans’ quality of life in the middle of the twentieth century due to the industrialization of the country’s economy. This event encouraged migration from the countryside to the city in search of better jobs and living conditions. But overcrowding in urban centers led to the proliferation of slums in the capital’s surrounding areas, where living conditions were deplorable. In House in Mangrove, the artist portrays the irregularity of the structures that evidence the lack of planning in these improvised communities. The only character in the scene turns her back to the viewer, perhaps emphasizing the anonymity of the marginalized sectors of society.
