DescriptionThis composition is the final sketch the artist executed for the fresco on one of the spandrels supporting the central dome of Il Gesù, the Jesuit Church of the Most Holy Name of Jesus in Rome. The Four Doctors of the Latin Church are portrayed in conversation. St. Ambrose and St. Gregory are depicted in the upper right, while St. Jerome and St. Augustine are below, looking upwards towards the others. Through the paint in the background, a pentimento (a modification or revision of the composition) reveals a change in the placement of St. Ambrose.
