DescriptionThis painting of Saint Andrew, part of a series depicting Christ’s twelve apostles, is an early work by van Dyck, produced while he was an assistant to Peter Paul Rubens in Antwerp. It demonstrates how the young artist developed a distinctly personal style under his mentor's guidance, characterized by rugged characters and textures. Van Dyck modeled the saint’s figure on a real person who appears in several of his works from around the same time. In this painting, the X-shaped cross identifies him as Saint Andrew.
