Not on viewDescriptionWith its sketched technique and emotional intensity, this painting is an excellent example of Anthony van Dyck’s early works. It possibly belongs to the first of several series of busts of Christ and the Twelve Apostles the artist made following the tradition in Flemish painting of creating such groups, just after establishing his workshop in Antwerp. Van Dyck achieved the individuality of his characters through their clothing, facial features, and attributes. St. Andrew, the apostle St. Peter’s younger brother, dressed in a red tunic and a blue-gray cloak, is identified by the x-shaped cross on which he was crucified.
