Not on viewDescriptionRuiz González depicts Charles II of Spain kneeling before a priest along with several other attendees. The priest is shown holding a monstrance with a consecrated host. The devotion to the Eucharist was a very symbolic representation, constituting one of the central rifts between Catholicism and the Reformation. Made in a time of great political instability, the purpose of this painting was to present Charles II as a devout king in continuity with his Habsburg ancestors.
