DescriptionBy the 1850s, Jozef Israëls began painting genre scenes, following the steps of artists like Jean-François Millet. This painting, executed in a dark tonal palette, is reminiscent of his best-known works of this period, which portray scenes charged with emotional intensity and capture the psychology and introspection of his subjects. Desolate interiors, in which light highlights the emotions present in the scene, are common in the artist’s compositions. Here, natural light illuminates a nursing mother, whose facial expression evokes a sense of gloom and, perhaps, fatigue.
