DescriptionMazzolino enjoyed the patronage of the dukes of Ferrara, the city of his birth, for whom he created countless religious works, including the decoration of eight chapels in the church of Santa Maria degli Angeli. As exemplified in this painting, in which he portrays a powerful God the Father holding the orb and offering a benediction, Mazzolino’s figures display spirited expressions, possibly inspired by contemporary German prints. This work may originally have crowned a large altarpiece.
