DescriptionPieter Aertsen and other Netherlandish artists combined their local tradition, renowned for landscape painting, with the figure style of their Italian Mannerist contemporaries. In this scene, Christ rides a donkey—adorned with an exotic cloth inspired by Oriental textiles—toward Jerusalem, visible in the distance on the left. Many figures in vibrant greens, reds, and yellows accompany him. Onlookers throw their garments on the ground in the donkey’s path, showing respect for Jesus.
