Not on viewDescriptionDavid Roberts traveled to Belgium on several occasions and was struck by the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Antwerp, which became the subject of his paintings repeatedly. Designed in the Late Gothic Style, the cathedral's south tower was never finished, giving the building its distinctive asymmetrical appearance. The cathedral's appeal for Roberts lies in its decorative detail and soaring peaks, along with its turbulent history. The interior was badly damaged by the Iconoclasts during the religious wars of the sixteenth century, and in 1794 it was desecrated by anticlerical French revolutionaries.
