DescriptionThis painting and its companion, "The Magic Lantern" (also in the museum's collection), depict savoyards, traveling entertainers from the French region of Savoy. Large numbers of men, women, and children emigrated from Savoy to Paris and other major cities, seeking to escape poverty and the harsh Alpine climate. This migration became a frequent theme in eighteenth-century painting, literature, and theater. As is typical, the artist rendered the girl in the painting in an engaging, somewhat idealized way, as a vivacious individual leading a modest life. She dons traditional regional clothing and headwear. Her trained marmot was a popular form of entertainment among savoyards.
