On View
Not on viewDescriptionThe indoor view captures the architecture of a colonial house in Old San Juan, turned into a bar. Located in San José Square, the establishment was a gathering place for artists, intellectuals and writers. They met there to listen to the jazz pianist Gladys Johnson and her inspired improvisations. She and the trumpet player Dale Wales, portrayed by Domingo García, popularized jazz among Puerto Rican artists and intellectuals. Prints and paintings of various sizes adorn the walls of the bar, which in its heyday served as a modest gallery for artists such as Tufiño himself. The light of the setting sun projects the outlines of the fanlights over the doors onto the backwall. Although no customers are present, the scene evokes a Bohemian ambiance of camaraderie by the dim light of the street lamp.
