Not on viewDescriptionAs in the case of "Still Life with Cupboard, Oil Lamp, Dishes and Jugs," also in the Ponce collection, this picture was originally part of a larger painting depicting the Holy Family in Joseph's workshop. In the original work, the Virgin Mary is shown sewing with this wicker basket to her left on the floor. Sewing was a common activity among women of the period, since it required patience, cleanliness and care, all of which were considered attributes of the ideal woman. The original work was divided and sold by parts, including these two still lifes now in Ponce.
