DescriptionThis resembles other works made by Rosado del Valle in the 1950s. As he did with other abstract works of the period, Rosado del Valle used a figure as a starting point in this painting, blurring the lines between abstraction and figuration in his oeuvre. In Birds No. 1, the profile of a bird is segmented with lines, geometric planes, and areas of a single color. As the viewer further observes the painting, other figures of birds emerge within the tangle of lines and shapes. The artist’s concern for texture and materiality becomes evident in this work, as he used sand (in addition to paint) as a medium and painted on the rough side of the Masonite panel.
