DescriptionMany of Francisco Rodón’s paintings are composed of various layers that evidence his innumerable reworkings and the sometimes-hidden earlier versions under the final work. "La Matinée," for instance, conceals a preliminary sketch on the back of the canvas. In this work, Rodón employed several tones within a limited color palette. It also displays his characteristic technique: he mixed oil paint with linseed oil and turpentine. Rodón presents his protagonist outside of an erotic context, distancing her from the traditional role of the nude in the history of art. The upright posture, the direct gaze, and the verticality of the umbrella prevent the figure’s nudity from being perceived through a lens of sensuality. On the contrary, the work denotes strength and resistance against the viewer’s gaze.
