DescriptionThis landscape by the French Baroque master Claude Lorraine is imaginary, like the other vistas and seaports he painted throughout his career, which he created mainly in Rome. Here, the artist portrayed a fortified town with a lighthouse, a Roman temple, and a cluster of trees. Lorrain’s liberties with natural and architectural elements were noted by the British artist Sir Joshua Reynolds in his 1771 lecture at London’s Royal Academy: “Claude was convinced that taking nature as he found it seldom produced beauty. His pictures are a composition of the various draughts which he had previously made from beautiful scenes and prospects.
