DescriptionWinthrop was the third American civilian governor of Puerto Rico. He was appointed by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1904 and served until 1907. Oller offers the full portrait of Winthrop to the Executive Council, and it is now part of the collection at La Fortaleza. This bust must have been a preliminary study. Oller portrays Winthrop in a black suit and vest, against a light background. Of an aristocratic bearing, Winthrop’s face lacks the force and roughness of Oller’s portrait of Governor General Davies.
