DescriptionDuring the 1980s, Sobrino created several paintings in which the main subject or setting was a beach depicted in the background. In the foreground of works such as Some Artists, Other Athletes, and the Rest Tourists, human and imaginary figures, along with images of objects, appear scattered across the pictorial surface of the coastal landscape. The crowd, which includes cyclists, bathers, and street vendors, extends not only across the sand and water but also into the sky. The stark, uncluttered representation of figures and objects evokes the enthusiasm and commotion of crowded beaches. This visual language has led to Sobrino's paintings, including this one, being categorized as “chronicles” of Puerto Rican beach culture.
