DescriptionLike his contemporaries, Hernández Acevedo documented in his works the transformation in the quality of life of Puerto Ricans in the middle of the twentieth century due to the industrialization of the country’s economy. This event encouraged the migration of the population from the countryside to the city searching for better jobs and better living conditions. But overcrowding in urban centers led to the proliferation of slums in the bordering areas of the capital, where living circumstances were deplorable. In House in Mangrove, the artist portrays the irregularity of the structures that evidence the little planning of these improvised communities. The only character in the scene turns her back to the viewer, perhaps emphasizing the anonymity of the marginalized sectors of society.
