DescriptionThe Old Testament Book of Daniel tells the story of Susanna, a virtuous woman who is falsely accused of adultery by two older men. The erotic tone of this representation is heightened by the image of Susanna and her gesture, which draws attention to her bare right breast, the center and focus of the composition. This depiction is an excellent example of a Rococo historical painting executed in the decorative style favored by the court during the reign of Louis XV. This work reflects the social transformation in which leisure, luxury, and excess gave way to amatory painting.
