DescriptionOller signed several sketches for his monumental painting, The Wake, including this exceptional oil-on-board, with four studies of the cat on the central roofbeam, for the final work. In its facture, Oller used short, precise, paint-laden brushstrokes to model the anatomy of the cats, shown in various positions. Oller masterfully used a limited palette, in which black, white, brown, and green predominate, and applied the colors on an unprimed wooden board. The study chosen for the final work is in the foreground of the left half of the painting. Only a fragment of the signature survived after the loss of the left edge of the work.
