DescriptionThis painting is an excellent example of the artworks representing scenes of daily life that abounded in Netherlandish art of the seventeenth century. The theme fits within Dutch realism, but it can also be associated with the new Caravaggisti realism practiced in the region. This artwork could also be an example of a "tronie", an analysis of expressions developed exclusively in northern European painting during the period. These present bust-size physiognomic studies of average characters, not intended as individual portraits. Usually, they were sketches that would later be incorporated into more complex compositions.
