DescriptionSaint Joseph and the Christ Child exemplifies how Campeche’s work transformed once he had contact with the work of Luis Paret y Alcázar (1746 – 1799), artist banished to Puerto Rico by the Spanish crown between 1775 and 1778. This influence is identified particularly in the handling of color and light, after which Campeche introduced a luminosity to his works that did not exist before.4 The artist illuminates the elongated and elegant figure of Saint Joseph from the left side of the composition and applies highlights that emphasize the movement of the fabrics and accentuate the facial features of the personages, especially the saint’s frown.
