Giovanni Battista LangettiItalian, 1635 - 1676

Born in Venice, he went to Rome early in his life & studied with Pietro da Cortona. Then to, possibly in the 1650’s to Naples to study Ribera, Giordano & Fracazano. Finally, perhaps to escape the plague, he went to Venice, possibly 1656. “With his realism, his theatrical use of light derived from Neapolitan painting, and his free, painterly surfaces, stimulated by the work of Tintoretto and Bernardo Strozzi, Langetti had an enormous success in Venice.” (Grove) “Because of his new realism, color and brushwork, Langetti was a significant influence on Venetian painting of the second half of the 17th century”.
