The Four Doctors of the Latin Church are portrayed in conversation. St. Ambrose and St. Gregory are depicted in the upper right, while St. Jerome and St. Augustine are below, looking upwards towards the others. Through the paint in the background, it is possible to notice a pentimento (a modification or revision of the composition), which reveals a change in the placement of St. Ambrose.
