DescriptionThe extreme realism of Van Reymerswale's painting, stressing every little wrinkle, vein, and wart, may reflect the influence of Dürer, whose works were greatly admired by this Flemish artist. This is one of the multiple representations of Saint Jerome by Van Reymerswale in his study, surrounded by the attributes that identify him as the translator of parts of the Bible into Latin. The book in the composition is open to an illumination of the Last Judgment.
