DescriptionIn the windswept Dutch countryside, a chained hunting dog ferociously defends his meal—a horse’s head, liver, and intestines—from two intruders. Storm clouds gather in the distance over hunters setting out from a castle, heightening the drama of the painting’s subject. Weenix painted this late work in Utrecht, not far from De Haar Castle (depicted in the background). When this work entered the collection, a piece of red cloth was painted over the horse’s severed head. Once this restoration was removed, the picture’s true emotional charge came to the surface.
