Not on viewDescriptionSon of a recognized surgeon, Ferdinand Bol began his artistic studies in his native Dordrecht and later settled in Amsterdam, where he became Rembrandt van Rijn's star pupil. In this painting, Bol depicts the prosperous Amsterdam merchant Hendrick Trip, originally part of a double portrait picturing the sitter's wife, Johanna de Geer. Bol had previously painted the couple in 1660, around the same time that Rembrandt completed portraits of Hendrick's parents, arms dealer Jacop Trip and Marguaretha de Geer.
