Antiochus, the son of the Babylonian King Seleucus, fell hopelessly in love with his young stepmother, Stratonice, and became deathly ill out of despair as he was unable to betray his father. In the painting, the prince is bedridden and ashen. The court physician takes his pulse and, as the King and Stratonice enter the room, he notes the quickening heartbeat and realizes that the cause of Antiochus’s illness is love. Seleucus’s face reveals his affection and fear for his son’s life – eventually, the King gives his wife and kingdom to his son.
