DescriptionBatoni depicts one of the great romantic tales of antiquity. Antiochus, son of Babylonian King Seleucus, falls hopelessly in love with his young stepmother, Stratonice. Despairing at his inability to betray his father, he becomes gravely ill. In the painting, the bedridden and ashen prince is attended by the court physician, who takes his pulse. As the King and Stratonice enter, the physician notices Antiochus’s heartbeat quicken and realizes that love is the cause of his illness. Seleucus’s expression reveals his affection for his son and his fear for his life. Ultimately, the King gives his wife and kingdom to Antiochus.
