DescriptionThis painting, probably cut down and reframed long before it entered the collection, shows archangel Gabriel’s announcement to the Virgin that she would miraculously conceive a son. Gabriel enters the scene from the left, his garments billowing as he bends one knee to salute Mary. By contrast, Mary’s static pose expresses her attitude of humble acceptance. As Gabriel speaks, a dove (the Holy Spirit) flies towards Mary as Jesus is conceived. The kneeling figure, depicted in a smaller scale to show his separateness from the scene, represents the patron who commissioned the painting as a way to immortalize his devotion. The frame is a copy of the original, in which Mary's words were inscribed in Latin: ECCE ANCILIA DOMINI FIAT MIHI SECUNDUM VERBUM TUUM ("Behold the handmaid of the Lord. Be it done unto me according to your Word").
