Not on viewDescriptionThis unusually large still-life depicts some of the objects in the collection of the earls of Devonshire, including expensive porcelain and sumptuous fabrics. These goods are arranged precariously atop a refined table, with a deed for land and medallion dangling off the edge. Many of these items were luxury imports from dealings across the globe, and these collections of curios showed off the owner’s wealth and global influence. However, the half-hidden skull and nearby book of Ecclesiastes reminds us that these pursuits and material possessions mean little in the end.
