DescriptionThe Virgin of the Rosary is considered the oldest Marian advocation in the Americas, as Dominican missionaries brought it in the first decades of the sixteenth century. This image depicts a miraculous statue known as the Virgin of the Rosary of Pomata, venerated in the homonymous Peruvian town on the shores of Lake Titicaca. Some attributes identify the sculpture, such as the feathers that decorate the crowns of the Virgin and Child. These are the feathers of an ostrich species native to the Andes, believed by indigenous customs to be associated with celestial beings. Paintings of cult statues were in high demand in the Spanish colonies.
