DescriptionThis composition is linked to devotion to the Immaculate Conception, one of the most popular Marian advocations in the Spanish colonies since the beginning of colonization. The celestial image of the Virgin standing on the moon, flanked by the traditional attributes and the presence of Saint Joachim and Saint Anne, confirms this premise. The Immaculate Conception does not refer to Christ, but to Mary's conception in Saint Anne's womb after her encounter with Saint Joachim. The scene is crowned by the Holy Trinity visible in the heavens.
