DescriptionDespite his untimely death at age 38, Palmerini received recognition in his hometown of Urbino. His talent for reinterpreting Raphael’s paintings was undoubtedly appreciated by collectors eager to acquire works in the late master's style. The artist has been associated with the ducal court of the province. Duchess Eleonora Gonzaga, a great patron of the arts, included Palmerini among the artists hired to decorate the Imperial Villa in Pesaro. This sacra conversazione, in which Saint Roch and Saint Louis IX, King of France, receive the blessing of the Virgin and the Christ Child, may have been commissioned by the Dukes of Urbino. Saint Louis IX wears the collar of the Order of Saint Michael, which had been awarded to the Duke in 1503.
