DescriptionThe subject of this work is the masks that are created for the “Fiestas de Santiago” (Festivity of Saint James) in the coastal town of Loíza. This Catholic folk festivity incorporates elements and practices that originated in Africa. It has as its emblem the struggle between the horsemen, the symbols of Good, and the “vejigante”, a horned mask representing Evil. Moya portrays a line of masks and horsemen against a neutral background. The bright colors are applied with a palette knife, in firm strokes, accentuating the tectonic character of the masks.
