DescriptionBeginning in 1512, Dürer enjoyed the patronage of Maximilian I, Holy Roman Emperor, and became his official court painter in 1515, a position he held until Maximilian died in 1519. This portrait, attributed to the German master, is considered a replica of the Emperor's posthumous likeness, now in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. The prototype, possibly commissioned by the emperor for an intimate setting, was based on a charcoal drawing the artist made in the sitter’s presence in June 1518.
