Description“To Adam he said, ‘Because you listened to your wife and ate fruit from the tree about which I commanded you, «You must not eat from it,» cursed is the ground because of you.’” (Genesis 3:17). In this scene, Adam and Eve beg for divine forgiveness after God pronounces his sentence. This work reflects the official style of the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture, as seen in the anatomy and dramatic gestures that evoke the figures of Baroque painter Nicolas Poussin, whose classicism influenced the academy from its founding. Antoine Coypel became a member of the French Academy at the age of twenty.
