DescriptionFor Courbet, landscape painting—often overlooked by the academy—was the best way to express his observations through art. He began experimenting with this genre in the mid-nineteenth century, inspired by seventeenth-century Dutch artists who had already recognized the value of landscape painting.
This landscape dates from the final years of Courbet’s life, when he spent time in self-imposed exile in Switzerland after his six-month imprisonment for his involvement in the revolutionary Paris Commune of 1871. The views around La Tour-de-Peilz, where he settled, reminded him of his cherished hometown of Ornans in eastern France, which he had often depicted in his earlier work. Courbet’s thick brushstrokes give the painting a rough, textured finish that suggests the mountainous terrain he found so captivating.
