DescriptionGustave Courbet began to focus on landscape painting in the mid-nineteenth century. The genre provided a way to put his direct observations of nature and his surroundings on the canvas. The exact location of the landscape portrayed is uncertain, but this work dates to the period (beginning in 1873) of the artist’s self-exile in Switzerland, where he lived until his death. Thus, the panorama shown in the painting could well be the landscape in or near La Tour-de-Peilz, the city where he settled. The impasto on this work, done with a palette knife (an essential tool in Courbet’s pictorial armory), bestows on the painting a rough finish that evokes the texture of the rocky landscape.
