DescriptionIn Greco-Roman mythology, nymphs were female creatures often associated with streams and water sources. They also accompanied Diana, goddess of the hunt, and bathed in the privacy of sacred groves. Here, one naked nymph disrobes another (perhaps the goddess Diana), as they dip their feet in the cooling water of a stream. The nymph on the left looks backward over her shoulder, as if she has just discovered the uninvited presence of the viewer.
