DescriptionThis portable triptych by José Campeche comprises three panels, each made at a different time. The two angels in the lateral panels correspond to an early period. The central panel depicts Our Lady of Mount Carmel, protector of sailors, whose devotion reached America with the Carmelite missionaries. The main panel, bathed in a rose-tinted atmosphere inspired by the island's tropical light, presents an entirely frontal figure of the Virgin within a symmetrical composition. These characteristics align with the neoclassical academicism that Campeche adopted towards the end of his career. This panel was commissioned by priest José María Ruiz y Peña, as indicated by the inscription on the back, two years before the artist's death.
