DescriptionThis work, which belongs to a series began by the artist in 2011, reimagines Ramón Frade’s Puerto Rican jíbaro, as represented in the latter’s celebrated painting “El pan nuestro” (1905).
In this series, Abismael Ruiz reinterprets this icon of Puerto Rican nationality with erased, cadaverous faces and straitjackets as a testimony to the exploitation of workers in agriculture. This painting is a great example of the artist's work, which employs traditional Puerto Rican imagery and iconography to comment on the country's current situation while also celebrating the archipelago's artistic heritage.
