DescriptionJael raises a hammer in her right hand to drive a spike into the head of the sleeping Sisera, seen at the lower right. Behind the tent's drapery, the heads of Barak and Deborah appear in the left background. The story of Sisera's death is told in Judges 4:17-22. The scene, set at night, is illuminated by a strong light that highlights Jael's ample figure and the soft draperies of her costume.
