This portrait was originally thought to belong to the Italian school, but later several curators, including Pierre Rosenberg at the Museé du Louvre, attributed it to Pierre Subleyras, a French painter active in Italy. Subleyras loved to render the beauty of costume as seen in the sitter’s lace sleeves.
