DescriptionThis depiction of a bust-length young Christ, with strong chiaroscuro and surrounded by a soft, glowing halo, exemplifies the small-format works typical of Sirani's oeuvre. Painted close to the picture plane with thick brushstrokes, fluid impasto, vibrant colors, and deep shadows, the figure also reflects the popular religious images of the Counter-Reformation designed to inspire the faithful during their private devotional practices. "Head of Young Christ" is one of sixteen paintings donated by the Samuel H. Kress Foundation to the Museo de Arte de Ponce in 1962.
