Awaiting them at the steps is Simeon, a devout man who vowed to behold the Messiah before dying. Here, holding the infant Christ, Simeon utters the famous words “Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace.” The Presentation of Christ in the Temple is a preparatory oil sketch for a large-scale altarpiece destined for the high altar of the church of Saint-Honoré in Paris. Meticulously painted by Philippe de Champaigne, this modello faithfully anticipates every detail of the final composition.
