DescriptionCarl Carlsen is known mainly for his landscapes and genre scenes. His works show a particular interest in portraying the passage of time and the effects of light, both characteristics of Impressionist painting, which he became familiar with during his stay in Paris in the early 1880s. In this painting, Carlsen depicts the typical upper-middle-class parlor, a space of exclusive female domain. Two women, one young and the other old, are engaged in activities associated with the domestic sphere, such as handwork and musical performance at home. The relationship between the two women is unclear. Still, the presence of a hat, stole, and umbrella on a chair at the left border of the composition suggests that the young woman is just visiting for her musical lesson.
