DescriptionThis print exemplifies Marta Pérez García's extensive mastery of the color reduction woodcut technique, a highly difficult printing method that the artist employs in many of her works. Unlike other graphic techniques that require the carving of multiple blocks to add different layers of color to a print, the color reduction woodcut technique uses a single block for all the color phases. For each desired layer of color, the block must be modified or carved so that the relief corresponding to the next color phase can be inked with a new color. Therefore, the block will shrink as the process progresses, precluding the repetition of the final image using only the remaining block. It is, thus, crucial to meticulously plan the final image and to print each layer of color as it is carved into the block in case that more than one print is needed. The multiple colors and details in this work demonstrate the artist's dedication to overcoming the complexity of this technique.
