According to the story, God sent the angel Raphael to act as a guide and companion of Tobit's son, Tobias, who had been directed to retrieve some money for his father from a distant land. Pictures of this subject were very popular in Florence in the 15th century and may have been done as votive paintings to insure divine protection for travelers. The companion panel for this painting, featuring Saint Jerome in prayer, resides in Bowdoin College, Maine.
