DescriptionIn "Contraste," Albizu applied several layers of pink, red, orange, white, and dark gray paint with a palette knife, creating a pasty surface. The multiple directions of the palette knife strokes reflect movement and a gestural technique that has many times prompted historians to include Albizu within the Abstract Expressionist sensibilities of the mid-century. Most color transitions in this painting are visible at the center of the composition, as in many of her best-known works of the period, including the paintings used as record jackets for albums by Verve and RCA Records.
