DescriptionThe artist represents the characteristic façades of Old San Juan seen from a distance through a loggia with three columns. Black lines define the windows, balconies, and balustrades of the capital’s buildings and the intrusive power lines that crown the city. In this painting, the urban landscape of Old San Juan has completely blocked out the natural world. The human aspect—such as the need for housing and the industrial developments in San Juan—has totally replaced nature. Like other artists of his generation, Hernández Acevedo exhibited a pressing interest in portraying Puerto Rican scenes, folklore, and other traditions in his works.
